I am very interested in art and thought it would be interesting to research a French artist. I chose Jacques-Louis David, a French painter. He was the strongest influence in French art of the early 19th century. He was an active supporter of the French Revolution.
Jacques-Louis David Biography
Jacques-Louis David was born in Paris, France and was a painter in the Neoclassical style. He was a friend of Maximilien Robespierre during the French Revolution and he was a dictator of the arts under the French Republic. He was given the opportunity of an excellent education, but he wasn’t a good student and had a speech impediment from a tumor on his face. His family wanted him to be an architect, but he wanted to be a painter and went to learn from the leading painter of the time, who was a relative. He had a very interesting early life.
David's Paintings
Jacques-Louis finally won the Prix de Rome after five tries with his oil painting on a canvas. The painting was called “Erasistratus Discovering the Cause of Antiochus' Disease” or, in French, “Érasistrate découvrant la cause de la maladie d’Antiochius dans son amour pour Stratonice.” David painted his famous painting “Oath of the Horatii” in Rome. The royal court had to check his paintings for propaganda and banned some of his paintings so the wouldn’t agitate the people. The link above shows many of Jacques-Louis’s painting and even gives a brief biography.
