I am interested in music in general (though I don't play an instrument) so I decided to look up some things on French music since I could enjoy researching that.
France's History
France has had a long history of music dating back to one of the earliest musical instruments the organum in the 10th century (Medieval Era). In the 14th century France had produced to notable styles of music at the time Ars Nova and Ars Subtilor. After listening to a couple songs in the general it kind of sounds like an oratorio or even an RPG's sacred grounds kind of music. A couple hundred years after the 14th century a man in France had patented the earlier known record of a sound recording device, this of course was used for many purposes one being music (of the audio quality sucked). If you're interested in listening to any of the music you can find it on youtube just by typing in the genre, and for more information on this subject you can use the wiki page which also has several audios on the right towards the middle of the page and the bottom. It's French
I personally enjoy almost all music so I find French music very interesting because it also presents a different accent, language, and tone than some songs I listen to making them unique. While doing this thread I found this great page where it is possible to just listen to a random assortment of French music and genres. Some of the music is in English so if you're looking specifically for songs in French this will work but there would be better places to look. This link, 8tracks.com/explore/french_music , will take you to the page on 8tracks that just has a playlist of French music.
France's Opinion
I was interested to see what some of the most popular songs in France currently are so I looked up it's top music charts. Unsurprisingly I found several American songs on their top 40 list including Treasure by Bruno Mars and Berzerk by Eminem. There were of course several French songs on the list (some of which in English). The surprising thing was that a Swedish song in English was the most popular song in France ( www.youtube.com/watch?v=IcrbM1l_BoI ) , after listening to it I can say that the song itself was not bad though the original MV didn't make complete sense to me. If anyone watches the video and comments on this thread could you tell me what you thought that was about.
