My topic is the Paris Opera House. I chose this because when I visited France, we did not actually go into the Opera House and it was a way for me to learn more about the building and its history. I like how related it is to the Phantom of the Opera and also wanted to learn more about that. Hopefully I can go back to Paris and check out what it actually is like inside. :)
Paris Opera House Video
This video is all about the Paris Opera House. It shows video of the building inside and out. It tells about the history of the building and also gives a little information about the Phantom of the Opera and how, although fictional, the play was based on not only the setting - the Opera House itself - but also certain events that happened in the Opera House such as when the chandelier fell from the ceiling.
Architecture of the Opera House
This website has a great selection of old and new pictures of the Opera House. It also explains a lot of the building's architectural history. The building is known as very historical and beautiful. Take a look at the pictures and see how they show the architecture on the inside and outside of the Opera House.
Phantom of the Opera Article
This article is about the relationship between the Opera House and The Phantom of the Opera. Like the video above, it tells of the myth of the Opera House being built on a lake, but also shows other interesting facts in the relationship. It says it is hard to decipher how much of the play is fact and fiction. The Opera House is a point of mystery in Paris.
Opera House 2012 Brochure
This brochure shows a lot of information from the Opera House's 2012 year. From about halfway down the document to three-quarters of the way down, there is a piece called "2012 in Pictures." This is filled with pictures from productions done at the Opera House in 2012. The backgrounds and costumes are very cool to see. One picture is particularly interesting to see because it is of a woman on stage with what is supposed to be water in the background. Since they cannot make a lake onstage, the backdrop is shimmering and gives the illusion of water.
Virtual Tour of the Opera House
This is a virtual tour of the Opera House. You can take a look at what is on the inside and outside. The staircase is very grand, and I thought the immense number of lights inside that room was interesting. Make sure you check out the ceilings too. All of them are filled with architectural details, and some have paintings on them. The directions on the arrows are in French, so be careful! Look at the colors in the pictures, too. There's so much gold!
