Benjamin Mace Bio
This is a link to Benjamin Mace's biography page on the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic website. He is a French speed skater born in Bordeaux, France. So far in Sochi, he has competed in the men's 1000m and 1500m competitions. We chose this link because it gives background information on who he is and what he does. We really don't know much about the different Olympic sports, so we chose one to learn more about.
Salt Lake City race
This is a link to a video of Ben Mace along with another Olypmic and international speed skater, Yuskov, competing in Salt Lake City, Utah, United States in the 1500m long track race. We have watched a lot of the both short and long track speed skating this month because honestly, it's amazing how fast and precise all the athletes are. One wrong step, and you can easily fall behind in the race. It's a really entertaining sport to watch and they are extremely respected in Olympic sports.
Speed Skating
This link is not focused directly on Mace himself, but the entire sport of speed skating. We like watching this because it's a sport both men and women compete in, and no rules are curved or bent in anyway for women. So many sports have limitations for women and things that men can do and women can't. The world of sports is extremely sexist still, and probably always will be. There are "men's sports" and "women's sports" so to watch speed skating with no limitations for women is nice. Speed skating was first introduced to the Olympics in 1924 and became an official sport in 1992. Short track speed skating is on a rink the size of a hockey rink, 111.12 meters around. Long track speed skating is a much longer and tougher race, which is held on a track that is up to 1500m long, which is the event that Mace competes in. The equipment required is a lot, there are speed skates, spandex body suits, helmets, eyewear, shin pads, knee pads, and neck guards. Ben Mace began speedskating in the Vancouver 2010 Olympics.
