As her relationship with Capel strength , Capel installed Coco into a Parisian apartment and financed her first shops. Through the sources and connetions these men made for Chanel she was then able to open up her own millenery shop in Paris. As her boutiques were forming in both Deauville and Biarritz the most devastating event occured when Capel was killed in a car accident . 25 years after the accident she told a friend her life would never be the same and in losing Capel she lost everything.

During the 1920's Coco became the first fashion designer to create a loose women's jersey, usually used for men's underwear and creating a relaxed style for women ignoring the stiff corseted look of the time. The soon became very popular with clients and for a post-war generation and restricted clothing seemed old-fashioned and impractical. In 1922 she launched a fragrance Chanel No. 5 which remains popular to this day. Pierre Wertheimer became her business partner and owns 70% of her fragrance business. She also launched her famous cardigan jacket and her little black dress.
During World War II chanel became a nurse, although her popularity diminished greatly with the affair of a Nazi officer she moved to Switzerland to escape the controversary. She then ended this self-imposed excile by moving to Paris and taking over the Christian Dior's overtly feminine New Look. She then began creating the introduction of pea jackets and bell-bottoms for women. During her life Coco created costumes for plays and cinematic works. Coco worked until her death in 1971 at the age of 88 living her last years of life in her private apartment in The Ritz. Karl Lagerfeld has been the cheif designer of Chanel's fashion house since 1982 and has continuously mine the Chanel archive for inspiration. Coco chanel's death was not the end of the career of fashion design, it was just the beginining of something new.
